The Alexander W. Spears III Family YMCA is friendly and uplifting every day. The staff are courteous, professional, and genuinely committed to the well-being of each guest. The facility is always neat, organized, and accessible; therefore, workouts and programs are a joy. I feel this is where the YMCA builds community with friendliness and reliable service. It does engender personal growth and wellness.
I don’t believe there is adequate guidance here for teaching swimming to children under 4 at the YMCA on Horse Pen Street. I used to bring my daughter here when she was 3 years old. One of the swimming instructors showed a serious lack of understanding of child psychology and age-appropriate teaching methods. My daughter had been attending swim sessions for nearly two years and was always happy playing in the water. She looked forward to swimming every week. However, one instructor—named J.—forcefully pushed her underwater without warning. She was terrified and cried intensely. Since that incident, my daughter has developed a strong fear of swimming. I sincerely hope there will be a review of instructor training and an investigation into how swimming is taught to very young children, especially those around 3–4 years old. Also, there is absolutely no monitoring of hygiene. The pool is full of hair, and many kids and adults get into the water wearing their dirty gym clothes. The pool basically turns into a public bath full of germs. It is disgusting to see people swimming in their smelly and dirty shirts. They need just shampoo to make it done! HERE NEEDS A SUPERVISOR!
It's been a few months since I've been here. The parking lot always seems full but when you get inside it doesn't feel crowded. They've added some more recumbent bikes, which is nice. My wife says that she doesn't like having to wait on an empty machine. Always a lot of people coming and going.
This YMCA is very clean, very lively, and staffed with great instructors. We also send our kid to the summer camp and he's participated in their youth sports programs. This is a great Y!
My son cancelled his membership online but still got charged and when we cancelled via email we got charged again because it turns out they have a rule for 15 day notice. What is purpose for that rule anyway?
